About the apartment change, completely agree. Something else to consider, how often she spoke of having to get a new mattress, right? Well, when you buy a new mattress ya' know what you don't buy? An entire new BED too. That "spare room" she shows, has a frame/headboard & bedding on it. If it were just a mattress (or even a spare room WITH somehow an extra bed, Chantal of all people would have it bare. There'd be NO reason to put bedding on a mattress/bed no one is using.

I believe Chantal got herself into trouble both at home and at school, was either kicked out of school or stopped going, was kicked out of her house and had to do the volunteering thing as some form of punishment and then told by the judge she had to finish school.They don't just take kids out of decent homes and out them into group homes unless that kid has some serious issues.
